Visitors to the Cotswolds this year have a one-off opportunity to win a hand-made silver charm bracelet, an extremely special prize. Caroline Richardson, based at Chipping Campden’s historic Guild of Handicraft, is seen here working on a snowdrop flower for the completed bracelet. The prize is open to visitors to four Cotswold gardens until late Summer. See Abbey House Garden, Batsford Arboretum, Mill Dene Garden or Painswick Rococo Garden for details.
The Sound of Textiles?
Posted by Culture Vulture in Art, Events, Live Music on March 17th, 2009
Stroud International Textile Festival (1-21 May, 2009) is an annual, innovative exploration of the wonder of textiles. And if that sounds like something for the initiated only… well think again and come down to the Stroud Valleys to have perceptions changed. These days textile artists create sculptural masterpieces that would grace any conventional art gallery. And Stroud’s event is world standard.
The organisers are always keen to diversify – this year Keith Tippett and Julie Tippetts play one of the most unusual gigs of their career as they bring contemporary jazz to the Stroud Subscription Rooms as part of the Festival, on Sunday, 3rd May. Tickets on 01453 760960.

Edmund de Waal commission
Posted by Culture Vulture in Events on February 19th, 2009
Potter Edmund de Waal will be working on a commission inspired by the nationally designated Arts and Crafts Movement collections at Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum.
de Waal, who famously criticised Bernard Leach’s shortcomings and has defined ‘minimalism’ for many people, plans a trail to run until the 3 May. de Waal is interested in ‘redomesticating’ the Arts and Crafts collection, taking on key Arts and Crafts pieces made by William Morris, C R Ashbee, Voysey and Gimson. His work operates tantalisingly between craft and contemporary art. de Waal will talk on his recent work on 18 March (1.00-2.00pm) (tickets £4.00).
